Samsung Electronics expands Cogiscan MSD Control system in China
13 July 2005
Samsung Electronics Computer Co. is announcing a strategic investment to expand their existing Cogiscan Moisture Sensitive Device (MSD) Control system across their factory in Suzhou, China. The system provides Samsung with the following benefits:
  • Improve customer satisfaction by preventing costly field failures.
  • Minimize number and duration of bake cycles.
  • Automate complex procedures, eliminating dependence on operator skills and training level.
  • Insure compliance with J-STD-033A rules/tables and facilitate IPC/JEDEC updates.
Mr. Lee Buyung Bum, Engineering Manager at Samsung Electronics in Suzhou: “Our most important customers are pleased that we fully comply with all the guidelines of the industry standard J-STD-033A. Our traditional methods and systems for controlling moisture sensitive components were simply not able to keep up with this challenging control task.

Our facility is producing some of the most advanced notebook in the worlds. These products combine a lot of processing power in a very small space. This high density forces designers to place more and more active components on both sides of the same circuit board. This has significant implications for manufacturing in terms of tracking the floor life of moisture-sensitive components. Some of the most sensitive components must go through the complete assembly process, including top and bottom-side assembly and reflow within 24 hours of opening their protective dry bag. In addition the upcoming transition to lead-free products will further reduce the process window associated with MSDs.

The Cogiscan MSD Control system is clearly the industry de-facto standard solution and it is widely recognized and accepted by our major customers. Everyone feels that the quality of our finished product is guaranteed by having the Cogiscan system in place across the factory.”

Jim Weik, Cogiscan Asia Regional Manager: “We are very pleased to have this successful installation in China. Leading companies like Samsung recognize the seal of quality associated with the Cogiscan MSD Control solution to attract and maintain satisfied customers.”

Moisture sensitivity is a key manufacturing issue that can create latent components defects if it is not controlled properly. The automated MSD Control system from Cogiscan insures that the latest standard will be properly implemented. By providing real-time visibility of all components on the factory floor, it enables production personnel to be pro-active and reduces bake cycles. This translates in lower manufacturing costs through a reduction in inventory and improvements in material flow and on-time deliveries.
